ICPC Grills Akala’s Aides Over Alleged 6.2 Billion Fraud

Three former Commissioners in the immediate past administration in Oyo State headed by Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala yesterday faced another round of interrogation by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Abuja in connection with an alleged N6.2billion fraud. This is in continuation of the Commission’s probe into Akala’s administration
Mrs Alero Odemwingie, one of those invited along with the former State Commissioners was however represented by her counsel as she failed to show up at ICPC Headquarters.
The three former Commissioners interrogated were Dr. Kola Balogun, the former Commissioner for Commerce and Cooperatives, Chief Bayo Bankole, formerly in charge of the Ministry of Finance and Alhaji Majekodunmi Aborode, former Commissioner for Environment
The Accountant in the state’s Ministry of Environment and two other suspects believed to have worked with Alero Odemwingie were also at the ICPC Headquarters
Counsel to Alero Odemwingie in a letter signed by Tolulope Olaiya and Adeyemi Pitan claimed that their client could not honour the invitation of the Commission because her daughter was sick
In the letter dated August 2, 2011 the counsels said “we write in furtherance of the notice of invitation to Alero Odemwingie (our client) dated 28 July, 2011. Regrettably, our client is unable to attend the said meeting at such short notice due to the fact the her daughter is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Ibadan
“We therefore request that the Commission reschedule the said meeting for a later date. We will appreciate if our office is notified of the re-scheduled date to enable us arrange for her to attend”
At the end of a short meeting with the counsels, the leader of the investigating team asked Alero Odemwingie to report at the ICPC Headquarters, Abuja, unfailingly next week Wednesday to provide insight into the contracts awarded to her
One of the three Commissioners, Alhaji Majekudunmi Aborode was later released on bail but directed to report in three weeks’ time with some documents on the matter
The two other Commissioners, Dr. Kola Balogun and Chief Bayo Bankole were still being quizzed by operatives of the anti-graft agency as at the time of filing this report.
