“Quit Flood Plains Within 7 Days”, Ajimobi Orders Landlords

Governor Abiola Ajimobi has given owners of properties built along flood plains in Ibadan till September, 7 to quit the areas. The ultimatum was given when the Governor went on an assessment tour of the areas affected by the flood that ravaged Ibadan last Friday.

The Governor disclosed that after the expiration of the ultimatum, all structures blocking free flow of water would be pulled down. According to the Governor, “the flooding would not have been this much, were it not for the flagrant disregard for town planning rules by past administrations who gave approvals for erection of structures indiscriminately.”

The Governor also condemned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains, an action he noted blocked free flow of water thereby contributing to the flood.

Governor Ajimobi announced that a Committee been put in place to assess the situation with a view to preventing future occurrence. He however ruled out payment of compensation to owners of illegal structures earmarked for demolition. He said only those who were affected genuinely would get assistance from the Oyo State Government.

Governor Ajimobi was accompanied on the assessment tour by Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State who came to sympathize with the Government and the people of Oyo State.
