Ibori’s Trial To Resume In February 2012

The former Delta State Governor James Ibori will remain in prison custody in England until February, 2012 when his trial will resume. The delay in the trial came after an argument by the former Governor’s defence team that they had not been given enough time to prepare.
The judge therefore ruled that “Ibori has a right to be competently defended” and should therefore remain in custody till February 13, 2012 when the trial will resume.
Street Journal was informed that Ibori’s lawyers are likely to base their case on the fact that a Nigerian court had already absolved Ibori of wrongdoing based on a ruling that there was no evidence that he committed any crime and as such, he should not be tried in the United Kingdom.
The former Governor is facing charges of looting billions of Naira belonging to Delta State and laundering the same during his eight years as the Governor of the state. His wife and mistress are already serving various jail terms in the United Kingdom.
