Barrister Alli who crossed to the Action Congress of Nigeria just before the April 2011 elections was recently appointed as the Chairman of the board of the Oodua Investment Company jointly owned by all the Yoruba States. The incident came barely two days to a party scheduled to honour him and celebrate his new appointment.
Though the matter was reported as an armed robbery attack, some members of the political class disclosed to Street Journal that there was a possibility of it being an assassination attempt. Street Journal’s findings revealed that Barrister Alli who also served as the Chief of Staff to Senator Rashidi Ladoja during his days as the Governor of Oyo State had survived several attacks before now.
The first one was during the heat of the clash between Senator Ladoja and his then political godfather; Alli went to Molete to felicitate with Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, the Strongman of Ibadan Politics. Thugs loyal to Adedibu swooped on his car and were in the process of vandalising the car and beating him up before the celebrant called them to order. The celebrant went ahead to pray for Alli and told the “boys” that they should not harm him because he could one day be the Governor of Oyo State.
He was again attacked in his Bodija home just before the 2007 elections when gunmen stormed his Bodija home and broke the wall into his bedroom. He however escaped mysteriously as the gunmen searched everywhere for him.
He suffered yet another attack just before the last elections as he was attacked by armed robbers around Iyana Church in Ibadan. The robbers drove him to Podo Village where they dropped him and made away with his Toyota Camry. The car has not been recovered till date.
Those supporting the assassination theory have chosen to base their argument on the Barrister Alli’s political activities in the not too distant past. One of them opined that though his moves lately have been calculative, they are capable of pitching him against some political forces.
Street Journal was made to understand that Alli was one of former Governor Ladoja’s most trusted men, having served as his SSG and Chief of Staff.
And during the then Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin’s travails, Barrister Alli was with him all through. He was always there in court while the murder issue lasted. But by the time Accord Party was formed, Alli opted for the Action Congress of Nigeria. And not long after, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Odua Investment Company.
They have chosen to base the theory on the fact that his rise seems to be too sudden, especially his defection to the ACN and his subsequent appointment as the Chairman of the Odua Board.
