Nigerian born Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who is standing trial for attempting to blow up Northwest Flight 253 on 25th December, 2009 with a bomb in his underpants has changed his plea to guilty on all counts. After pleading guilty, Abdulmutallab said his action was to avenge the killing of his Muslim brothers and sisters.
The charges were read to him in a Detroit court on Wednesday and after each count, he replied “I plead guilty.”
Addressing the court, Abdulmutallab said “the Qur’an allows every Muslim to undertake jihad. I carried the device to avenge the killing of my Muslim brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, my actions make me guilty of a crime.”
The accused described the explosives he hid in his underwear as a “blessed weapon” which he said he wanted to use against a tyrant nation, the United States.
Prosecutors reminded the court that Abdulmutallab attempted to ignite explosives hidden in his underpants on Christmas Day in 2009, but the device failed to explode and Abdulmutallab was subdued by other passengers aboard the plane.
In his statement before the court on Wednesday, Abdulmutallab disclosed that he was inspired by the slain Al-Qaeda leader, Anwar al Awlaki who was killed in a drone strike recently. Abdulmutallab however insists that Awlaki is still alive.
As he was being led out of the court, Abdulmutallab said “Allah Akbar”, which means God is great. He will be sentenced on the 12th day of January, 2012
