Gruesome Murder: OPC Shoots Man Dead In Lagos!

If young Yussuff Olawale had known that fate was about to play a cruel one on him, he would probably have decided to remain indoors on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Or maybe he would just have retired indoors early. He eventually lost his life in the hands of a trigger happy member of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress around 10.30 pm on that day.
Yussuff who lived in the Karounwi/ Oduduwa end of Surulere, Lagos met his untimely death while having a good time with his friends in a local bar just within his neighbourhood. The Sunday evening fun went on until a member of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress who also doubled as a member of the vigilante group engaged to guard the neighbourhood came in.
What remains unknown is the criterion he used in choosing who he went to. Eye witness accounts disclosed to Street Journal that the OPC man approached Yussuff and demanded that the deceased should give him some money. Yussuff’s refusal to yield to his demand for “egunje” obviously irked the vigilante group member. All those in the bar and around were shocked at his next action. He cocked his gun, levelled it at the young man and shot him dead on the spot.
Though the case is now being handled by men of the State Criminal Investigation in Panti, the culprit is yet to be found as he took to his heels after the dastardly act.
Yussuff was described as a very cool and unassuming person by neighbours in Karounwi Street. Those who knew him closely even disclosed that there had never been any altercation between him and any member of the OPC or vigilante in the neighbourhood. He was just an easy going young man who minded his own business. It was disclosed that even the incident that led to his death was more or less the polite refusal of a demand.
A friend of the deceased revealed that he had just finished his O levels and was waiting for the next Universities Matriculation Examination before he was murdered.
Street Journal also gathered that in that particular neighbourhood, there had been several cases of being”obtained” (that is, being forced to part with money) by OPC and vigilante men. Residents also confirmed that there is a high rate of illicit drug consumption among members of the OPC in the area. ‘Hemp is smoked by these OPC guys as if it is a legal substance’, a resident confirmed.
Efforts to reach the Police PRO for comments proved abortive as he could not be reached on phone as of the time of filing this report.
