By now, many residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital would have prepared their mind that they might be celebrating an “explosive sallah” this year. At least three loud explosions rocked the city on Friday and the explosions were followed by sporadic gunshots in some locations. Within minutes, streets became deserted as people ran into the safety of their homes.
An explosion occurred at the El Kanemi College of Islamic Theology while the Friday prayers were ongoing while another explosion was simultaneously reported just outside the headquarters of the Joint Task Force while the third targeted another government agency.
The attack on the JTF Headquarters was said to have been carried out by a suicide bomber who drove an SUV. JTF sources disclosed that he could not gain entrance as security around the Headquarters has already been fortified.
Friday’s attack came barely 48 hours after the JTF began a door-to-door search to minimize the number of illegal weapons in circulation within Borno State.
Though no one has claimed responsibility for the explosions, the Boko Haram sect is believed by many to be the masterminds,
For some time now, the group has carried out various forms of violent attacks.
