Senate Passes Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill

The Senate on Tuesday passed the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill. The bill outlaws same sex marriages in Nigeria and insists on a punishment of 10 years imprisonment for offenders.

After much deliberations on the bill, the Senate President disclosed that there was no other choice but to pass the bill as same sex marriage is not in Nigeria’s culture, neither is it in “our values.”

The bill also stipulates that anyone who aids or abets the formation or registration of gay clubs or organisations will be liable to a jail term of ten years. Also, any clergy that administers such marriage will be liable to ten years imprisonment and the place of worship closed permanently.

The bill will be ready for the President’s assent if the House of Representatives passes it too.
