The leader of the militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau appeared on a video on Wednesday to justify his group’s attack on Christians in the northern part of Nigeria. Scores of Christians have been killed in bomb and gun attacks in the last three weeks.
In the video that was broadcast via the internet on Youtube, Abubakar Shekau, sat between two Kalashnikov AK-47 rifles and wore a bullet-proof vest. He spoke in Hausa language and disclosed that apart from the group’s war with security agents because of the execution of their former leader, the group has declared war on Christians. According to Shekau, the group has decided to avenge the death of Muslim brothers who were slain in some parts of the north. Speaking about the crisis that rocked Jos last year, he said “they killed our brothers and ate their flesh in Jos,”
The most recent attacks came after the expiration of the ultimatum given by the group to southerners to leave northern Nigeria. The Federal Government has however continued to assure citizens of safety of their lives and property.
