Akwa Ibom Stolen Money: Governor Akpabio Debunks Insinuations of Ownership

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio has debunked claims by some newspapers and websites that the sum of N 2 million belonging to him, was stolen from his protocol team at the Ibom International Airport.

A member of the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s media team disclosed that the Governor knew nothing about the stolen money; neither did it belong to him. The source went further that “a relation of a Government Director who was returning to Uyo lost the sum of N 1.5 million and the thief was caught”, why then would anyone link the Governor with such an occurrence?

It was further disclosed that the incident took place while the Governor was away and most members of the protocol team alleged to have lost the money were not even in Akwa Ibom State when the incident took place.

For some days now, the media have been awash with stories of the arrest of 3 staff of the National Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) attached to Arik Airlines. It was reported that the accused persons allegedly pilfered N2 million from the luggage of a Government House, Uyo protocol staff at Ibom International Airport.

The money was allegedly removed from the about N8 million reportedly taken to Lagos by the protocol team for use during Governor Godswill Akpabio’s trip for his recent investiture as The Sun Newspapers Man of the Year award ceremony.

According to media reports, the incident took place when the protocol team was returning to Uyo. The suspects were subsequently arrested and detained for questioning at the airport police station after which they were transferred to the State’s Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia.

The trial of the suspects has already started at the Chief Magistrate’s Court 1 in Uyo.
