A High Court sitting in Abeokuta Ogun State has discharged and acquitted the immediate past Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel of all 43 money laundering charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC had told the court in October last year when Daniel was arraigned that it had more charges. The EFCC eventually added 27 additional charges in November.
Otunba Gbenga Daniel was accused of stealing and diverting billions of Naira belonging to Ogun State for personal use. The charges were on Friday knocked off after the court had ruled that the EFCC did not file them in an appropriate manner. The court’s decision was followed by jubilation in most areas in Sagamu where the former Governor lives and some parts of Abeokuta.
Speaking outside the court, former Governor Daniel simply said “we thank God, God is on the throne”
In another development, the Supreme Court also on Friday upheld the elections of Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan as the Governors of Imo and Delta States.
