A massive explosion rocked the Garden City of Port Harcourt on Thursday causing panic in the Rivers State Capital. Two people were reported to have died as a result of the explosion which took place at Rumuokoro. Eye witnesses say the explosion came from a commercial bus which was apparently loaded with explosive devices.
The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that the driver of the vehicle died in the explosion. one of the three people who were pushing the vehicle at the time too died on the spot while several others were injured. Witnesses claimed that the bus broke down and was being pushed when the explosion occurred, the Police account however says the victims of the explosion were armed robbers who were undertaking an operation. The Governor of Rivers State, Hon Rotimi Amaechi too disclosed that the victims were armed robbers who were trying to escape after a failed bank robbery.
No person or group has claimed responsibility for the blast.
