John Atta Mills, the President of Ghana is dead. The demise of the West African President was announced on Tuesday.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Office of the President which read in part “it is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely death of our President”. Street Journal gathered that the 68-year-old President took ill earlier on Tuesday and passed on hours later at the 37th Military Hospital, Accra. Though the cause of death was not specified in the statement, it was gathered that the late President had a running battle with throat cancer.

President Mills who celebrated his 68th birthday on Saturday did not complete his first term in office and would have been up for re-election in three months. He contested three Presidential elections before he was eventually elected.
