Senate Confirms First Female Chief Justice Of Nigeria

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Mariam Alooma Mukhtar as the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Mukhtar, whose name was sent to the Senate by President Goodluck Jonathan also happened to be the first Nigerian woman to be appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, way back in 1987 and the first female judge in Nigeria’s Supreme Court, a feat she achieved in in 2005. She was called to the English Bar in 1966 and was called to the Nigerian Bar the following year.

Justice Aloma Mukhtar who will become the 13th Chief Justice of Nigeria, succeeds Justice Dahiru Musdapher who retires on July 15, having reached the retirement age of 70 years.

Justice Mukhtar was born in November 1944 and is expected to remain in office till 2014 when she too will turn 70.
