The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Kyari Garbai Ibn El Knaemi on Friday escaped death as a suicide bomber detonated explosives in Maiduguri during Friday prayers as the monarch observed prayers in the mosque near his palace.
Eye witnesses said a young lad who bore the explosives walked towards where the Shehu and the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mustapha were. Security operatives however shielded him as he approached the well respected traditional ruler. The bomb went off, killing about ten people just as he was being shielded by security men. At least five soldiers were killed in the blast while several others were injured.
