Ejigbo Stands Still As Ogiyan’s Daughter Weds

Getting to Idi Ape Baptist Church, Ejigbo on Saturday, August 25, 2012 posed no problem, even for first time visitors. The Church which was established in the town in 1892 is one of the oldest in Ejigbo. As this reporter drove into the ancient town and asked for directions, he was told to “just drive straight and turn right at the next junction. You would have seen a lot of cars around there. That is the venue of Kabiyesi’s daughter’s wedding”.

The love of the people for Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode Oyesosin was evident at the ceremony as people trooped in from all corners of the town to rejoice with the monarch as he gave out the hand of his daughter, Temilade in marriage. Street Journal’s WOLE ADEJUMO was there.

ABOUT THE COUPLE

Temilade, one of the Ogiyan’s pretty daughters attended Unity School, Ejigbo after which she proceeded to the University of Ibadan where she obtained a degree in Zoology. Princess Temilade did her NYSC at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Abuja. She has however delved into business. She is into big time catering and events while she also sells clothes.

Tolu Fapohunda, the groom hails from Ijan in Ekiti State. He graduated as an Engineer from the Lagos State University, specializing in Chemical and Polymer Engineering. Their love story started after a chance meeting at an eatery in Abuja a few years ago. They went for lunch separately but became friends and from there, the relationship kicked off.

WITH LOVE FROM BROTHER OBAS

The Ogiyan is a highly revered Oba in the Ejigbo axis and by extension, the whole of Yorubaland. The royal presence at the wedding proved to be a testimony of Oba Oyeyode’s role as a leader among the monarchs in his area. Traditional rulers who attended the church service included the Olugbense, the Atilade 1 of Ile Ife, Alaaye of Elefon Ife as well as the Obe Pero of Abiri Ife.

Representatives of the Ooni of Ife and the Aragbiji of Iragbiji were also in the church.

AUGUST, OGIYAN’S MONTH OF CELEBRATION

The royal family in Ejigbo had cause to celebrate earlier in August. Just a week before the wedding, there was a new addition to the family as one of Kabiyesi’s children had a baby. At the wedding venue, guests were heard asking when the next party will come up.

THE PREACHER’S MESSAGE

In his message, Rev Edward Alabi of the Molete Baptist Church, Ibadan advised the couple to stay united. He also urged them to be tolerant of each other. “Adjustment and tolerance are Siamese twins”, he said. Rev Alabi noted that everyone should enjoy his or her marriage as best as they can because there is no marriage in heaven. He threw the church into repeated sessions of laughter with his continuous usage of the phrase “e maa gbadun ara yin”  (enjoy yourselves) in his advice to the new couple.

WITH LOVE FROM EKITI STATE

From the groom’s family came the former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal. He wore the same Ankara with the groom’s family. Trust tale bearers, they were quick to observe that Dr. Lawal has adjusted well to life outside office.

UNVEILING THE MOTHERS OF THE BRIDE

Though Temilade is Olori Agnes’ daughter, most of those who don’t know the family closely could hardly tell who the mother of the bride was; all the four Olori’s of the Ogiyan wore the same outfit.

Two of them are incidentally named Ruth; the others are Olori Alice and Olori Agnes. They are like sisters and the joy of motherhood was visible all over them.

THE OGIYAN’S LOVE FOR HIS ASIWAJU

It is an open secret in Ejigbo that Chief Atilade Adebowale is a beloved Chief in whom the Ogiyan is well pleased. Chief Adebowale is the Asiwaju of Ejigboland and the title was given to him in appreciation of his leadership qualities that have put him at the forefront of making Ejigbo better. He has also provided employment for many Ejigbo indigenes.

WHY REMI OLOWUDE WAS ABSENT

IGI boss, Remi Olowude was conspicuously absent at the wedding. The prominent Inisha son is known to be very close to Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin.  Since he could not make it to Nigeria for the wedding, he delegated Alhaji Fatai Ademola, the South West Operations Manager of IGI to represent him.

THE LAST GUEST OF THE EVENING!

Not many people thought the Ooni of Ife would attend the reception as two of his representatives were seen in the church. Oba Okunade Sijuwade was however driven into the Ogiyan’s palace at exactly 4.06 pm. He rode in a sleek black Mercedes Benz S 500. He came from Offa where he had gone to attend a ceremony hosted by the Oloffa.

Obe Oyeyode personally received him at the palace courtyard where Ooni’s car parked and like young pals, they embraced each other while the Ooni put his hand on the Ogiyan’s shoulder as they strolled to Oba Oyeyode’s private living room.

Not many people know that the Ooni and the Ogiyan have a very strong bond that has lasted for close to four decades. Their closeness also has a background in Yoruba history: Akinjole Ogiyan who founded Ejigbo was an Ife prince.

KABIYESI TOO WAS ON THE DANCE FLOOR

Evangelist Dunni Olanrewaju, better known as “Opelope Anointing” was on the bandstand and she dished out nice gospel tunes. The fllor was declared open by Kabiyesi who danced with the couple. The monarch sure gave a good account of himself dancing and singing along with Opelope Anointing. He was simply unbeatable, Kabiyesi was also the one that sprayed by the bundle.

PRINCE ENIOLA’S STYLE

Prince Eniola Oyeyode is one of the Ogiyan’s sons. Though he works in Ibadan, he is well known at home. On sighting him at the palace gate, drummers crowded around him and sang his praises. As a personal principle however, Prince Eniola does not dance in the open.  He was on his feet all through the duration of the reception party as he went round to personally ensure that guests had all they wanted.

One thing about him is in and out of Ejigbo, Prince Eniola carries himself with an unmistakeable princely grace and he has a smile for everyone.
