Professor Cyprian Onyeji, the Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Technology, Enugu was on Wednesday abducted by gunmen. The VC was abducted at the instituin’s main gate as he was being driven into the main campus.
In a swift operation, an old vehicle which had been parked near the institution’s gate suddenly moved and blocked the entrance to prevent the Vice Chancellor’s two vehicle-convoy from entering. Four men alighted from the car and started shooting into the air. They were joined by about six men from another vehicle.
The gunmen shot the tyres of the Police escort vehicle that accompanied the Vice Chancellor while a policeman was also wounded in the attack. The abductors dragged Professor Onyeji’s driver and orderly out of his official Honda car as they entered and drove off with the VC inside.
Opinions are divided over the kidnap. While it is believed in some quarters that Prof Onveji might have been kidnapped for ransom, it is being insinuated that the act might have been perpetrated by some cultists who were expelled from the institution not long ago. Some of the expelled cultists were said to be in their final year.
