In a commando-style operation, gunmen on Sunday invaded the Oko Medium Security Prison, in Benin City, Edo State facilitating the escape of not less than 10 inmates of the correctional facility in the process. The jailbreak was made possible with the use of explosives and assault rifles used by the attackers.
In the attack which took place in the early hours of Sunday, the gunmen who came in a big bus hurled dynamites at the gates of the prison and started shooting after the explosion. There are reports that the men were members of a gang who came to free some of their members who are on death row. The warders however reportedly rose to the occasion and a gun battle ensued.
Twelve other inmates were apprehended before they could make good their escape through the damaged barricades of the prison.
