In a bid to ease the sufferings of the displaced people in the area, The Street Journal Forum took its charity scheme to Makoko, Ebute Metta area of Lagos. Apart from the fact that many were displaced, four residents of the area were killed during the recent demolition of a section of the place.
With the sole aim of putting smiles on the faces of Makoko residents at the back of their minds, members of the Street Journal Forum put items such as clothes, shoes, kitchen and other household items together and headed for Makoko on Sunday 5th August, 2012.
Traveling by boats through the Makoko creeks proved to be a worthwhile venture as the residents could not hide their joy at seeing people coming to lend a helping hand. The obviously happy residents came out in their numbers to welcome the forum members.
The distribution of the items was coordinated by members of the Forum in conjunction with the Chairman of the CDA, Mr. David Shemeden and his assistant who they call “Seven Seven”. The items available proved to be the ones needed by most of the residents and they were indeed happy to see their needs met. The eager residents were served with joy and passion by members of the Forum.
Describing the experience at Makoko, a member of the Street Journal Forum described life in Makoko as a mystery. The member said “they (the residents) seem comfortable, happy and full of life in an abnormal environment. Sincerely, Makoko is a mystery. Aye pe meji. (There is another world) It was indeed a voyage of worthy cause.
