The Borno State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zanna Mallam Gana was assassinated on Monday evening.
Street Journal gathered that he was shot around 8.30pm, in his hometown, Bama, about 100km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Gana was in company of Alhaji Abba Yerima, the former chairman of PDP of Bama Local Government of Borno State, who recently defected to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). While Yerima is being treated in a local hospital, the slain Attorney General will be buried on Tuesday afternoon.
Though the motive of the killing cannot be readily ascertained, it is believed that the act might have been perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect because a similar gun attack was carried out in Bauchi around the same time in which a former Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Jarma Katagum was killed in Bauchi State.
Borno State has been a hotbed for some time now. It will be recalled that a Governorship candidate and cousin to the immediate past Governor, Alli Modu Sheriff was shot in front of his house as the elections drew near last year. Maiduguri, the capital is also known to a stronghold of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
Street Journal also gathered that Bama too has a cell of the dreaded sect. One of the late leaders of the sect Habibu Bama, a former army officer hailed from the district.
