Femi Fani-Kayode, I know your problem. Your father served in the govt of the First Republic which is still regarded by many (Yorubas, Igbos and Hausas alike) as very corrupt and the genesis of Nigeria’s myriad of complicated moral, leadership and economic problem. I know it always makes you uncomfortable. Now to your main point in this essay point: Yes, you rightly claimed that “the Federal Government of Nigeria made ‘a very generous offer’ to Ojukwu and the Biafrans to open a road corridor for food to be ferried to the igbos and to lessen the suffering of their civilian population…” but Ojukwu rejected the offer. Now why didn’t you mention why Ojukwu rejected the offer? Or you thought that might spoil your argument? Okay, you cannot in all honesty claim that you never heard that the Biafran leadership rejected the “generous offer” because they strongly believed that the food would be poisoned! And they had sufficient reasons to believe that they could be poisoned given the excessive hate and estrangement that inspired and sustained the genocidal war. You will find it difficult to deny that the war that that followed was a great opportunity for the other side to extend the Igbo extermination project that had started with the massive and senseless killing of Igbos and other Easterners in North and later in the Western cities — where civilians and officers were hunted out and slaughtered savagely – while the same “generous” Federal Government looked the other way. I can assure you Femi that if you were in Biafra at that time, you would most likely consider accepting that “generous offer” as some kind of mass suicide. If the aim of the Federal Government was just to bring the East back to the federation, why all that wanton advertisement of cruelty and mass slaughter of civilians even after the war was declared ended? Now who is engaging in revisionism? Biafrans like Achebe tasted and experienced it all, and they know what it felt like – and their account will remain more credible than some “historians” merely hearing about the bloodbath from the comfort of Lagos.
Remember, Femi Fani-Kayode that it is known that this is not the first time you are coming out to insult Achebe just to win some political capital. When Achebe rejected the grossly devalued “National Honour” given him by your corrupt master Gen Olussegun Obasanjo, you were there to insult Achebe just to please your master. Now, out in the cold, most people would likely believe you are you are seeking political rehabilitation with this recent attack. I wonder if this will help you.

The question is – Who are the orginal sponsors of Chinua Achebe’s story and why are they doing so ? It is more interesting to note that the book is sponsored by foreign organisations suddenly interested in Nigerian political history whose motives are to damage documentary evidence pointing to Awolowo’s legacy and the Nigeria unity. They are necessarily advocating interest in a case that is none of thier business but of course the irony is that Chinua Achebe and his sponsors at his respected octogerian age cannot tell a story about the second world war on how F. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were mastermind of genocide by dropping an atomic bomb on Japan.
Our respected Chinua Achebe does not have the heart to tell a folk tale on how genocide is perpertrated because US blocked Cuba during the missile crises but he interpretes genocide only in Nigerian Baifra blockade context ! Achebe cannot tell a tale on why blockage against North Korea is genocide. In a war all parties loses, but our Achebe only remembers the Biafra’s loss !
The reason why Awolowo advocated education for all is that , he knows it empowers the younger generations to be enlightened and well informed such they can judge the accuracy of those tales and distinguish them from malicious motives behind it – personal vendatta of generation wars !
We know for instance that Chief Ojukwu himself went on national televison and declared that ” Obafemi Awolowo was the best president Nigeria never had” ! He healed the wound for future records. He did not refer to Nnamdi Azikwe, one of our national heroes, who controversially abandoned the Nigerian ship but had pledged to save and defend the unity of Nigeria ! Those are patriots in times of need from Achebe’s tribalistic tale !
Nigeria symbolises strength in diversity and its adversaries knows that the tribal or biafran card is its achilles heel because its creates a magnetic convergence of disunity at the slightest provocation. We therefore become the laughing stock for aliens powers as when expressing our discord like kids fighting publicly over a potluck of porridge at the least incentive. What a shame !

I am an African born in the diaspora of America. I cannot question the integrity of Chinua Achebe, but I can question if like all great leaders he has erred in some of his thoughts and positions.
