Ogunyemi who was in the area for an update on a clash between the police and commercial motorcyclists in the area was rough handled by the officers, despite showing his FRCN identity card. All explanations offered by the staff reporter seemed to fall into deaf ears. He was beaten by the officers after which he was compelled to do frog jumps for almost half an hour. The area was in turmoil on Wednesday after a clash between policemen and commercial motorcycle operators.Trouble started when a cyclist who carried two passengers tried to turn on seeing a police team standing on the road ahead of him., being aware of the police rule banning commercial cyclists from carrying two passengers. In his effort to turn, he and his passengers fell off the bike and a police Inspector ran towards them. Before long, cyclists who were around mobilized and rushed towards the police, and a clash resulted, following rumours that the cyclist died during the clash.
While motorcycle operators alleged that their colleague was manhandled and killed by the police, the Force PRO, Ayodele Lanade said the Inspector approached the fallen “Okada” rider with the intention of helping him. The commercial motorcyclists reinforced and stormed the police post in large numbers. They released all those in detention and vandalized almost every vehicle in sight. 28 people were later arrested in connection with the incident.
The Force PRO could not be reached for comments on the manhandling of the journalist.
