The Accident Investigation Bureau disclosed on Friday that the cause of the June 3, 2012 Dana Air crash may never be known, no thanks to the loss of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) of the crashed plane to the post accident fire. This was made known by the Commissioner of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Usman Mukhtar while addressing a press conference in Lagos. Mukhtar disclosed that though the solid component of the Flight Data Recorder was retrieved, the digital component was lost to the post accident fire. Explaining further, he said “it is like cooking an egg. The shell is intact but the egg inside is destroyed.”
He also disclosed that efforts to determine the cause of the crash proved futile as America’s National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the independent U.S. government investigative agency responsible for civil transportation accident investigation, where the crashed Dana FDR was taken, could not retrieve anything from the device. He said the only conservation that was retrieved was from the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). He also made it known that the engine of the aircraft has been taken to the NTSB in Washington DC for further investigation.
It is a known fact that without the FDR, the cause of a plane crash cannot be determined and any result arrived at would amount to mere speculation.Mukhtar disclosed to newsmen that his Bureau has made 32 recommendations to the Federal Government out of which only 20 were accepted.
