. To Be Remanded In Prison Till March 4
The payment of the N 750,000 fine option to avoid a 6-year jail term might not have brought respite the way of John Y. Yakubu after all. Less than 48 hours after the Assistant Director who pleaded guilty to charges of stealing N 23 billion escaped the prison sentence, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dragged him back to court on Wednesday and filed fresh charges against him.
Yakubu pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of false declaration of assets brought against him by the anti-graft agency, and despite pleas from his counsel that he should be remanded in EFCC custody, Justice Adamu Bello acceded to the request of the EFCC and ordered that Yakubu be remanded in prison custody till March 4 when the trial will commence.
Justice Bello however stated that the defence team could approach the court before the trial date to file an application for bail.
