The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers on Saturday had a close shave with death as his convoy was waylaid by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, who opened fire on the vehicles including the Emir’s limousine.
The attack occurred at Massallacin Murtala where a Quránic graduation was held , on Saturday afternoon. Though the traditional ruler escaped unhurt and is fine, four people including his orderly and three other body guards lost their lives in the attack. His driver was also seriously injured. The Emir’s eldest son, the Ciroman Kano also escaped with injuries.
Kano has become tense with gun attacks becoming more rampant. Two members of the stat’s House of Assembly were gunned down in a spate of two weeks. Traditional rulers too seem to have become targets of insurgents in recent times. In the last quarter of last year, the Emir of Fika narrowly escaped a suicide bomb attack while praying in a mosque in Potiskum, Yobe State.
