Akwa Ibom State Governor and known ally of President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Godswill Akpabio has emerged as the Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, a newly set up body made up of Governors from the PDP.
Akpabio’s emergence as Chairman was announced after a meeting between the President and PDP Governors late on Sunday. Speaking after the announcement, Chief Akpabio hinted that “the Governors’ Forum still subsists and it will not lead to a crack in the larger forum as other political parties too have the right to form a similar forum.”
There had been insinuations that Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivesr State had been penciled down for removal as Chairman of the Governors’ Forum. Governor Akpabio however denied that moves were ever made to remove Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum. He also disclosed that the PDP Governors’ Forum would take decisions only on matters affecting the party.
The new Chairman was presented to journalists by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the party’s National Chairman. It is believed is some quarters that the formation of the PDP Governors’ Fprum would cut both the influence and the powers Amaechi wields within the party.
The meeting was attended by PDP Governors including the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Amaechi.
