The Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Ladah watil wal Jihad, better known as the Boko Haram sect has officially confirmed the kidnap of the 7 French tourists who were abducted in Northern Cameroon last week. The confirmation was made via a video that showed the French nationals, three adults, two men and a woman and three children sitting behind a masked man who made the announcement of their capture.
The man wore military gear while two men with assault rifles stood on guard one on either side of the hostages.
In the video which was posted on Youtube on Monday, the man who acted as the spokesman spoke in Arabic and gave conditions for the release of the hostages. He stated that the Nigerian government should release the female jihadists in its custody while the Cameroonian government should release the males too.
He also pointed out that the kidnap was as a result of the war being waged against Islam in Mali. He threatened that if their conditions are not met, the hostages would be slaughtered.
The video came out hours after a group which claimed to be a part of Boko Haram denied involvement in the kidnapping of the French nationals.
President Francois Hollande had last week stated that the French family was abducted by the Boko Haram sect.
