Suspected pirates on Tuesday morning shot dead three soldiers and a retired naval officer in an attack on a barge in Bayelsa State. The fallen men were attached to the Joint Task Force and were accompanying an empty barge from Warri to Port Harcourt where it was going to load petroleum products when they came under attack. Street Journal gathered that the vessel, which belongs to an Indian company, Sterling Global Oil Resources was fired at by gunmen who ambushed them around Angiama.
Onyema Nwachukwu, spokesman of the JTF however stated that two soldiers and one crew member were killed while three civilians were wounded. He said “our troops were escorting the Sterling Global Oil barge when they ran into an ambush. Two soldiers and one civilian were killed. “Troops have been deployed to the area because some of the gunmen fled wounded.”
The driver of the barge was reportedly taken away along the Sagbama Local Government Area waterways in Bayelsa State.
