Popular South African double amputee athlete, Oscar Pistorius, fondly called the “Blade Runner” was on Friday arraigned before a court in Pretoria for the murder of his girlfriend. The athlete broke down in tears when the charge was read to him.
Pistorious’30-year-old girlfriend was shot four time with a 9 mm pistol registered in the name of the athlete. The blonde model, Reeva Steenkamp died after being shot in the head and hands early on Thursday February 14.
Pistorious is to remain in police custody as his bail hearing has been delayed till Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Pistorious earned himself a name when he became the first double amputee to compete in the Summer Olympics. The 26-year-old star athlete once told a newspaper that he sleeps with a guns, a baseball bat and a cricket bat for fear of burglars. He won two gold medals in the last edition of the Paralympics in London, winning in the 4x100m and 400m.
Though there are speculations that it was a Valentine’s Day visit gone wrong and the famous athlete mistook his girlfriend for a burglar, police say they will pursue a premeditated murder charge against him.
