Less than 24 hours after the inauguration of the Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, suspected members of the Boko Haram sect struck again. There was another terror attack in Gashua, Yobe State as gunmen attacked security bases in the town. There was continuous shooting for hours as the militants engaged security personnel in a battle.
Street Journal gathered that the gun battle started shortly after midnight on Thursday. The first port of call of the terrorists who shouted “Allahu Akbar” as they marched on was the Mobile Base area which houses a police formation. Residents also hinted over the phone that an attack was launched against the prison in Gashua.
One of the residents stated that they have been warned by soldiers to stay indoors till 1 p.m when the tension would have calmed.
The spokesman of the Joint Task Force in Yobe, Lieutenant Eli Lazarus, confirmed the incident via a text message shortly before 1 a.m. Part of the text read “fighting is currently ongoing between JTF troops in Yobe State and suspected Boko Haram terrorists who attacked military location and the police station in Gashua town of Bade LGA. Other details would be provided later.”
The state’s police command later confirmed that 25 people, five of them policemen died in the battle.
