. Company To Forfeit Assets
Adeyemo Abiodun and Ebele Eromosele, both employees of Barewa Pharmaceutical Compnay Ltd. were on Friday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
The company and its employees had been dragged before the court on an amended 6-count charge bodering on the production of My Pikin, a teething mixture that killed some infants years back.
The employees were convicted on two of the counts while Justice Okechukwu Okeke acquitted them of the other four counts. Both accused persons were sentenced to a prison term of seven years each while the judge also ruled that the company should be compulsorily wound up and its assets forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Okeke said “the prosecution tendered several exhibits in the trial of the accused, but failed to lead evidence that the accused actually produced the adulterated drugs.
I hereby find the accused not guilty of counts one, two, five and six, dealing with production and adulteration of drugs, while I find them guilty of counts three and four which is conspiracy and sale of the drugs.
The accused are hereby convicted as charged”
One of the accused persons, Adeyemo Abiodun collapsed and when a Doctor was called in, it was confirmed that he was hypertensive and his blood pressure had risen.
