Nigeria recorded her first casualties in the on-going mission against Islamist militants in Mali as an Alpha Jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force crashed in Niger Republic on Monday. Air Force spokesman, Air Commmodore Yusuf Anas disclosed that the plane was stationed in Niger as part of a Nigerian squadron supporting the mission in Mali. He stated that “an investigation is going on to find out what happened. They were on a normal routine flight about 60 km (37 miles) west of Niamey when something happened” Nigerien officials disclosed that the plane crashed around Dargol, in the Tillabery region, close to Mali.
