What could have been a tragic national loss was averted on Saturday as the plane flying a Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) team from Lagos to Johannesburg had to make an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola.
The NFF team, led by its President, Aminu Maigari was heading to Brazil for the Confederations’ Cup to watch the Super Eagles final group match against Spain. Also on the flight was the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon Godfrey Gaiya.
A number of top rated sports journalists including Kayode Tijani, Ade Ojeikere and Jide Alabi were on the flight too. Street Journal gathered that after two hours in the air, the pilot had to make an emergency landing in Luanda. The team arrived in Johannesburg later in the evening and will proceed to Brazil on Sunday morning.
Kayode Tijani who gave a narration of the incident on his Facebook wall described it as “very scary”. He also wrote “we are thanking God now as we survived a plane crash scare on the flight from Lagos to Johannesburg after two hours flight. The experienced pilot had to do an emergency landing at Luanda, Angola.”
