The murder trial of South African athlete, Oscar Pistorius has been adjourned till August 19. The postponement came on Tuesday at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court as the athlete’s lawyers asked for more time to prepare. Magistrate Daniel Thulare granted the request after the prosecutors disclosed that the date had been agreed upon. Pistorius, fondly referred to as the “Blade Runner” because of his artificial limbs had been charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp who was shot in the bathroom in his house on February 14.
26 year-old Pistorios admitted that he shot into the locked bathroom, claiming he thought there was an intruder. Prosecutors have argued that it was a premeditated murder while the athlete’s lawyers claimed it was a fatal error. The defense attorney had stated that he was trying to defend himself and his girlfriend.
Since his bail in February, Pistorius an Olympian and one of South Africa’s most popular sportsmen has not made any formal public appearance. The case will now resume on August 19, which incidentally is Reeva Steenkamp’s birthday.
