It became evident on Tuesday that the crisis rocking the Rivers State polity might not end soon as a crowd of placard-carrying protesters stormed the Port Harcourt international airport chanting anti-Amaechi slogans. The protest was obviously well-timed by the organizers as Governors Ra`biu Kwankwaso, Sule Lamido, Babangida Aliyu and Murtala Nyako of of Kano, Jigawa, Niger and Adamawa states respectively were at the airport and witnessed the protest. They had gone to Port Harcort, the Rivers State capital to pay a solidarity visit to Governor Rotimi Amaechi meanwhile, the protesters had been at the airport as early as 7 am.
The Governors were held back for some time as a result of the protest and could not leave the airport. As they left after about an hour of waiting, some of the protesters pelted the vehicles that conveyed the Governors with water bottles, stones and sticks.
Hon Amaechi has faced a number of political battles even before the controversial Governors’ Forum election. The political situation reached a crescendo last week when a group of 5 lawmakers impeached the Speaker of the House of Assembly, resulting in a rather embarrassing fracas with videos uploaded on the internet.
