Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha was on Friday discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal Lagos over the 1996 murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola. The appellate court upturned the January 30 verdict of the Lagos High Court in which Justice Mojisola Dada which had earlier sentenced the appellant to death by hanging.
Also discharged and acquitted was Lateef Shofolahan who has been standing trial with the former CSO to the late Head of State.
Both men had approached the Court of Appeal a day after their conviction by the High Court.
In the Appeal Court’s verdict, the lower court was accused by Justice Rita Pemu who presided of of being “stroked to secure a conviction by all means”. The judgment was given by the trio of Justices Rita Pemu, Amina Adamu Augie and F.O Akinbami.
