The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Leyii Kwane has denied speculations that he is trying to flee Nigeria in order to avoid investigation by the police. The denial was contained in a statement signed by David Amusa, the Media Assistant to the Deputy Dpeaker. Below is a full text of the statement made available to Street Journal.
“The attention of the Office of the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been drawn to the rumour making rounds that the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Barr. Leyii Kwanee and other pro-Amaechi lawmakers are attempting to leave Nigeria,to avoid police investigation and to that effect some journalists have approached the Deputy Speaker for his reaction.
The Deputy Speaker wishes to state that himself and other pro-Amaechi lawmakers do not have any skeleton in their cupboards or anything to fear and have no such plans to leave the country, hide from public glare or from the security agents.
If there is any group of legislators who have any reason to fear, cover up and possibly leave the country, it should be the anti-Amaechi lawmakers.
The investigation if thoroughly and honestly carried out will exonerate the pro-Amaechi lawmakers of causing the fracas and put to shame the ploy by the anti-Amaechi lawmakers to embarrass the House.
The Office condemns in its totality the peddlers of the rumour and the rumour itself describing it as mischievous, calumnious and intended to wage a war of attrition to save their face and pacify their pay masters.
The Office urges the general public to disregard the rumour and be reassured of our unflinching support for the Governor of Rivers State,Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.”
