Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital stood still on Thursday as more than 10,000 women under the auspices of the Nigerian Council of Women Society (NCWS) staged a rally tagged “Celebration of Nigerian Women for Peace and Empowerment”. The event is to celebrate women who have contributed to the development of Nigeria. It was also used by the women to appreciate President Jonathan’s contributions to women empowerment.
The celebrations kicked off with a motorized mass rally from the Old Parade Ground as early as 7.00 am. Some major roads, especially around the Central Business District were blocked by security agents who have been deployed to ensure a hitch-free celebration. Roads leading to Eagle Square were shut while traffic was diverted to other routes. Helicopters were also seen carrying out aerial surveillance.
After creating awareness with the parade, the women who came from the 36 states of the federation as well as the FCT moved to the Eagle Square.
At the event, which has Dame Patience Jonathan as mother of the day and Vice-President Namadi Sambo, as the special guest of honour, awards would be presented to deserving women.
