The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Amune Peter,,of Osomurika Road, Igarra, Edo State for defrauding a man under the pretence of selling a car to him through public auction by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Street Journal gathered that the suspect was arrested in Auchi, Edo State on September 16 September following a manhunt by police detectives attached to Agbara Division of the command.
The PRO of the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed that Amune had already collected the sum of N 200,000 from his victim Mr Umeugoji Johnson who claimed to have seen the announcement of the auction placed on internet by the suspect. The victim paid the money into the bank account of the suspect in Auchi.
He further stated that the suspect had told Mr Johnson, the victim, to meet him and his colleagues at Agbara for the public auction purportedly carried out by the Customs Service.
According to the PPRO, the victim, who eventually realised that he had been duped, ran to the Agbara Division to report and the DPO Agbara, CSP Ayo Sonubi swung into action immediately and the suspect was arrested.
Adejobi told Street Journal that “the suspect has confessed to the crime confirming that he belongs to a syndicate that is fond of duping people with such modus operandi. The command is intensifying efforts to get the other members of the syndicate arrested. He will be charged to the magistrate court Agbara as soon as investigation is concluded.”
The Ogun State command has also advised members of the public to always be sure of any transaction they want to venture into so as to avoid being duped by unscrupulous elements.
