Findings have revealed that Feyi, the only son of the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Agagu was one of the survivors of the ill-fated chartered Associated Airline flight that crashed in Lagos on Thursday. Other survivors include Femi Akinsanya, a son in-law to Dr Agagu, Femi Owolabi, and Akintunde Taiwo. Akeem Akinsanya who was rescued alive gave up minutes after.
The plane crashed around 9.35 am shortly after it took off. Street Journal gathered that the plane suffered engine failure after it took off. The impact of the crash sparked a fire which consumed most of the front of the plane.
About 20 people were on board the plane which also carried the remains of Dr Olusegun Agagu. The casket bearing the remains of the former Governor was retrieved almost intact. The former Governor’s widow, Mrs Olufunke Agagu and Mr Femi Agagu, the deceased’s younger brother had arrived Akure on another flight and were waiting at the airport to receive the body when they were told about the crash.
In Akure, people wore mournful looks. The Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and other officials who were at the airport to receive Dr Agagu’s body left with sadness written all over their faces after the news had been broken to them.
As the crowd at the Akure airport dispersed sadly, those who had gathered at the Democracy Park, the proposed venue of the lying in state also left one after the other. Not long after the news of the crash filtered in, all the decorations at the venue were removed.
Meanwhile, the Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah has confirmed the recovery of the plane’s Digital Voice Recorder. She also stated that investigation has begun.
The Ondo State Government described the incident as “shocking”. In a statement issued after the crash, it was pointed out that “a commissioner, family members, associates and other top government officials were also involved in the crash”.
“We can only pray that God will visit the State with mercy and give us all the strength to bear these unfortunate losses.
We ask all residents to be in a sober and prayerful mood at these trying times as God is indeed the only person we should call upon in this period,” the statement read.
