Professor Omo Omoruyi, a former Director-General of Centre for Democratic Studies and adviser to former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has died. The Professor of Political Science and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin died on Sunday after battling with cancer for years.
He passed on in a hospital in Benin, a month after he returned from overseas where he had gone to receive medical treatment.
Some years ago, Omoruyi gave indications that Babangida might have abandoned him as he pleaded for help while seeking treatment when his cancer resurfaced. He was quoted as saying the former military President should not attend his funeral if he dies. Back in 2008, Omoruyi who was treated in a Boston hospital in the United States was given five years to live by his Doctors. He told reported then that “In Boston, the Doctor said, ‘Omo, we have tried for you. For your kind of cancer, five years is the maximum.”
Professor Omoruyi was 73.
