Rt Hon Tonye Harry, a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has died. Harry who was then an Accounts Officer at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology was elected to represent the Akuku Toru Constituency in 1999 largely due to his loyalty and consistency as a party member. After the inauguration of the assembly, he was elected as the Deputy Speaker, a position he occupied for eight years while Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi served as Speaker.
Following the confusion that trailed the governorship candidacy of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State in 2006, fate positioned Hon Harry as the man to occupy the Speaker’s seat. He also won the votes of his people to represent them in the House for a third and fourth term in the House. He was removed as Speaker in 2011, he however remained a member. He was one of the lawmakers loyal to Governor Amaechi during the crisis that rocked the state House of Assembly.
He reportedly suffered a heart attack while reading and passed away on Thursday. He was 47.
