A number of commercial banks in the Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State were raided by a group of yet to be identified men in the early hours of Monday. Street Journal gathered that the gunmen used explosives freely in the course of their operation which started on Sunday night and lasted till the early hours of Monday.
The style of operation gave rise to speculation that the gunmen might be Islamist militants. The group of gunmen believed to be about 20 was said to have engaged security operatives who confronted them in a fire fight that lasted for hours.
Residents confirmed that there were several terrifying explosions and long bursts of gunfire. Makarfi town is located on the Kaduna-Kano State border. .
The Kaduna State Police spokesperson could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing the report.
