Nigeria’s former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe (rtd) passed on in New York on Monday evening, less than 24 hours after rumours of his death had filtered into Nigeria.
Akhigbe, who served as Military Governor in Ondo and Lagos States was diagnosed with throat cancer some years back. Findings revealed that he started treatment about three years ago and that took him to several hospitals outside the country, including the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Hospital in Manhattan where he was discharged shortly before he gave up.
Street Journal gathered that the former Chief of General Staff was receiving some guests in his house when he suddenly developed some complications. Some members of his family were there too when he passed out and could not be revived.
After his time as Governor, under General Ibrahim Babangida between 1986 and 1988, he was appointed the Chief of Naval Staff. He became the Chief of General Staff after Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed office as the Head of State. He was aged 67.
