Senator Chris Ngige and Mr Tony Nwoye, candidates of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party respectively in the governorship election in Anambra State, have called for the cancellation of the exercise. Labour Party’s Andy Ubah too joined the call for the cancellation of the poll.
While stating that the election should be cancelled, Senator Ngige who spoke in Awka on Sunday described the election as a “charade”.
An obviously displeased Ngige said “the election was fraud ridden. We are going to demand for the cancellation of the entire exercise. With this election, it has shown that Maurice Iwu’s INEC is far better that the current INEC leadership. He said INEC has taken a step forward and three steps backward”.
In a statement signed by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed on Sunday, the party said its call for total cancellation of the election supersedes its early call for a rerun in 4 local government areas, and is based on the report it received from its agents as well as from local and foreign observers during the election.
“After consultations with our agents as well as with local and foreign observers, we have discovered that what we earlier complained about was a child’s play, compared to the widespread disenfranchisement that was orchestrated by the same body given the responsibility of ensuring a free, fair and credible election on Saturday”, Mohammed stated.
It was also contained in the statement that “we discovered that INEC has set up a multi-layer arrangement to ensure that most voters in the state were disenfranchised, apparently acting out a script to manipulate the result of the election in favour of a certain candidate.”
