Nigeria’s Super Eagles, on Saturday became the first African team to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup to be held in Brazil. The Eagles beat the Antelopes of Ethiopia by 2 goals to nil at the U. J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Victor Moses opened scoring for Nigeria in the 20th minute via a penalty kick after an Ethiopian had handled the ball in the 18 yard box. It was obvious that the Eagles lacked cohesion. The Ethiopians incidentally were similarly inclined. The scoreline in the game which was dominated by individual efforts remained one nil until the second half when Victor Moses was substituted for Victor Obinna Nsofor who slotted in a curved free kick to which the Ethiopian keeper had no answer in the 84th minute.
The Eagles thus qualified on a 4-1 aggregate.
