Former militant and leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo Asari was on Tuesday arrested in Benin Republic. It was contained in a statement released by Mr. Festus Keyamo, Asari’s ;lawyer that the bearded former militant was arrested by gendarmes in Cotonou between and 2 pm and was taken to an unknown destination.
Asari Dokubo, whose investments in Benin Republic include real estate, schools, automobile academies and a football club among others was reportedly arrested around the Lubeleyi roundabout.
Keyamo’s statement read in part: “We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country.”
Keyamo also alleged that his client’s detention was a bid by an unidentified individual working with the Beninoise authorities to “keep him away as 2015 approaches.”
The lawyer therefore urged the Nigerian government “to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo-Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria.”
According to the statement released by his lawyer, all his business interests have been searched since he was picked up this afternoon with “nothing incriminating found.”
The former militant is known to be a supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan. He recently predicted that there would be chaos if the President is not re-elected in 2015. Meanwhile, not too long ago, Asari adopted Beninoise nationality in protest of the failure of Nigeria to create an Ijaw nation.
While speaking to Street Journal, Keyamo disclosed that a press conference would be addressed on Wednesday.
