The Taraba State House of Assembly, on Monday elected Honourable Josiah Kente as its new Speaker. The election came as the assembly had to replace Rt Honourable Haruna Tsokwa, the immediate past Speaker, who died after a brief illness last week.
Street Journal gathered that Kente, who was the Deputy Majority Leader of the Assembly, was the consensus candidate for the position after members had agreed that the position of the Speaker should be allowed to remain in the Southern Senatorial Zone of the state.
Findings revealed that the Late Speaker’s deputy, Tanko Maikerifi was not considered in order to allow for religious balancing in the leadership of the state since the Acting Governor, Garba Umar is Muslim. The House thus considered a Christian for the head of the legislative arm of government.
Honourable Tsokwa died of a heart related ailment on November 4. His life had been attempted by suspected assassins who injured his police escorts in a gun duel while he was travelling out of the state capital some months before he died. Incidentally, shortly after his death, the Deputy Speaker too survived an assassination attempt.
