In what seems to be a response to the supposition of the military forces that the Boko Haram sect would be dislodged from their bases before Christmas, the terrorist organization launched bloody attacks in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in the early hours of Monday. A 24-hour curfew has been slammed on the state by military authorities.
Places that came under attack the Composite Group Air force Base and the international airport in Maiduguri as well as the Divisional Police Station, Bulumkutu. At least two planes were destroyed by the terrorists. The new Trailer Park along Damaturu Road as well as some public buildings and private residences were also attacked.
Sporadic gunshots and other sounds including those from Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers were heard as early as 3 am. The military forces too responded and carried out airstrikes which lasted till around 8 am in Maiduguri and Jere metropolis till 8 am.
The terrorists reportedly planted bombs in strategic locations around the city and the Boko Haram strike force that carried out the attack was believed to have comprised of about 300 men.
Casulaties were recorded on both sides. Though there is no official figure yet, witnesses said about 5 military operational vehicles were seen carrying bodies believed to be military men to the morgue while hundreds of terrorists also fell to the military forces’ firepower.
