The leader of the infamous Boko Haram Islamist sect, Mallam Abubakar Shekau has claimed responsibility for a daring raid carried out on December 20. The claim was made via a video released on Friday.
The Boko Haram terrorists stormed the barracks in Bama, a border town in Borno State in a convoy of trucks early in the morning and opened fired on the soldiers inside before setting some buildings ablaze. There were claims that the insurgents kidnapped a number of women and children. That has however been debunked by military authorities.
In the video, Shekau who sat on a mat, surrounded by armed men claimed his men destroyed 21 armoured tanks and killed a multitude. He also said “our fighters stormed the Bama barracks. This is a victory from Allah.”
The release issued by the Defence Ministry however indicated that more than 50 terrorists were killed when ground forces backed by fighter jets pursued the fleeing Islamists after the raid.
